Earth Materials and Natural Resources

One of my FAVORITE parts of the day is Science time! My sweet scientists just finished up Unit 4: Earth Materials and Natural Resources. We did lots of experimenting these past couple of weeks. We began the unit with rocks. I read books on rocks and we talked about properties of rocks. My students get really excited to work on their interactive journals, so we went to work right away.

My students did a little hands on with observing some rocks. They each had a rock to observe and recorded their findings into the journals.

They used their rock's properties to make a cute craftivity, Rock Monsters. Each monster was unique.

We compared salt water and fresh water and did a mini experiment.

We talked about Natural Resources and Man-made Resources. I played this power-point for them so they could have a clearer understanding of the two. We did an anchor chart together as a class, did a picture sort and went on a nature walk to list some natural resources and man-made resources that they saw.

Do you love science as much as I do??

Fun with Force and Motion

WooHoo! I am so excited that tomorrow is Thursday and we all know what that means?! The next day is Friday! Then we are on Fall Intersession, 2 weeks off ! Excited to get more things done for my class.  Here's what we've been up to in science these past 2 weeks. We worked on my Unit 3: Force and Motion.

The kids and I had class discussion of how motion describes the way an object moves. We listed examples inside our Spin, Slide and Roll flaps. Then the fun starts after that.

The kids had so much fun making their pin wheels and observing the spinning motion it makes when the wind hits it. It was the perfect day to be outside. Look at those clouds!

They all went down the slide to observe the motion "slide."

Then we got to roll a couple of basketballs across the classroom and recorded our observations on "How does the object move?" into our interactive science journals.

We made an anchor chart together in the class of examples of things we can push and pull. The kids then sorted out their "Push and Pull Card Sort Pictures" in their journals.

We will end this week with a fun Sound Energy experiment. It's a great closure to this unit and I just know my students will love it.

Well that pretty much wraps it up. 2 more days until vacay time!

A Linky Party and a New Science Unit

I have decided to join a link party "Show off your Space 2" over at Swimming Into Second Grade. I love seeing all sorts of classroom set-ups and decoration pictures, it gives me inspiration with my own classroom.

I am finished with my second science unit Science Interactive Journal Unit 2: States of Matter. It is a continuation of my first unit

We worked on 2 experiments where my students observed changes in matter. I'm telling you, they LOVE science as much as I do. It's becoming one of my favorite subjects.

What's your favorite subject?

Science Interactive Journal Unit 1

One school week done and the second one starts tomorrow! Usually the most stressful weeks of school are in the beginning and towards the end. I have so much to share with you all, but finding time has been a real pain. I wanted to share my first packet I made for my students to use in their Science Interactive Journals. We started off by introducing our first unit, what is a scientist? I first made an anchor chart with my students brainstorming their ideas on what they thought a scientist was. I then showed them this power point from Kindergarten...Kindergarten's blog. They drew pictures of What is a Scientist in their journals, signed a Science Safety Contract, drew pictures of science tools they already knew how to use and put together a science tools foldable ALL in their journals. You can now purchase the first unit in my TPT store.
